Programme Aims
•
To provide graduates with expertise and a critical knowledge of the discipline that is underpinned by the experience, research and scholarship of the academic staff and which strives to reflect the key issues that affect the world in which we live.
•
To develop graduates who demonstrate professionalism, and are equipped to enter the world of work and are enterprising or entrepreneurial by nature. We use tutorial modules, practical work, work-based activities and research projects to develop and refine the transferable skills (and the confidence and proficiencies that such skills endow) that produce graduates with the abilities that employers seek. Our graduates will be required to be enterprising, innovative in how they think and conduct their work, and creative in seeking solutions based on the knowledge and skills that the curriculum imparts.
•
To develop and capitalize on their knowledge and understanding in terms of effective communication such as to demonstrate an ability to work in teams and with diverse stakeholders. The development of communication, presentation and team working skills lie at the heart of the award and are nurtured from first principles to a high level of proficiency in many of the thematic modules and, especially, through tutorial programmes, the work placement and professional practice modules, and the employability modules.
•
To nurture independence of thought and creative ability to find solutions. The degree award enables students to take ownership: of their learning, individually or in groups; of the conduct of a research project or a work-place project; of critical reading and writing in thematic modules; of tutorial discussions and presentations and through such ownership demonstrate values and attributes highly priced by employers.
•
To develop their understanding through critical reflection; to question different views and perspectives and to use both their generic and specialist skills (including technology supported learning) to recognize and resolve problems.
•
To explore and develop an open mind-set and the capabilities needed for challenging environments, and be able re-invent business norms with sustainable eco-measures.
What is distinctive about this programme?
The Institute has a strong commitment to employability skills in relation to the way its courses are taught and the expectation of the skills that will be developed over the study period and beyond. In parallel to this the Institutes has created the Accelerating Skills Plan to allow all students to have the opportunity to gain employability skills while studying at the Institute. There is a dedicated module on employment skills and the option to complete work related learning in the form of a placement or client project. All students have to complete a graduate employment plan at induction and their progress is monitored throughout the course. We encourage students to include additional learning opportunities within their chosen awards and co-curricular activities such as work experience, volunteering and the development of employability, enterprise and entrepreneurial skills. The final year project and dissertation can be completed as a start-up project.
